Vietnam gained 6.1 more points and remained in 98th position in the most recent FIFA Men's World Rankings
. In Southeast Asia, the squad was placed top, followed by Thailand and the Philippines.
The results were credited to
 their 3-1 win against China on the first day of the Lunar New Year
, which enabled them become the Southeast Asian team with the greatest performance in World Cup qualifying ever
